BRENT ROOTS Drawing - A Crash Course with Luke Shepherd - Yellow Studio

This 10 week crash course for 16-25 year olds is more of a practical how to draw, than a creative self-discovery course. We will look at the language of mark making and how it can be used to depict what we see and what we perceive. Or put another way, “How to see something and have it come out on paper!” The course requires no previous experience. Each lesson will be a mini-project plugging into a fundamental aspect of drawing. The course puts drawing in the context of historical and contemporary art. We will be looking at the styles and through the eyes of artists such as Henry Moore, Henri Matisse, Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Egon Schiele and Cy Twombly and your favourite artists too. We will use pen, ink and charcoal, but some methods are transferable to digital.

Brent Roots is a programme of Skills Sessions for Young Adults Aged 16 – 25.  South Brent Old School Community Centre is working in partnership with South Brent Feoffees and Art House to deliver a series of classes and workshops for young people in the South Brent area.  12-15 year olds are welcome to apply if they have parental permission.

The course programme for 2026 is now available!  Download it here or pick up a copy in the foyer at the Old School Community Centre.

Fees for South Brent residents are subsidised by South Brent Feoffees, so we are pleased to offer courses to young people for just £5 per session!  That’s £50 for the term (each course runs for 10 sessions).

Some places are available for young people from surrounding parishes, subsidised by SHDC. This currently includes: Rattery, Dean Prior,, Avonwick, North Huish, Diptford, Holne, Buckfastleigh West, Ermington, Wrangaton, Ugborough and Ivybridge.

Bursaries are available: contact us (OSCC) to apply for a free or a reduced cost place.
